Guest Speaker Andy Maloney – Team, NZ

Team NZ has won the 35th America’s Cup. Who would have thought their innovative catamaran would use cycle grinding to power the hydraulics and control the boat's systems. You have got to give it up for Kiwi innovation!

Of course this innovation brought the challenge of a whole new set of crew positions to fill. Team NZ’s aim right at the beginning of the campaign was to bring in a new generation of young, fit and ultra-talented New Zealand sailors. They certainly did that by recruiting Andy Maloney who became a cyclist / grinder or “cyclors” as they have come to call themselves. Andy's role was to help power the hydraulics that controlled the boat as well as offside foil trimming.

Andy, who packed on 10 kg for the role, is said to have been one of the strongest cyclists aboard Team NZ, having thrown himself at the challenge after narrowly missing out on the Laser spot at last year's Olympic Games.

We are delighted that Andy will share with us his America’s Cup campaign experience including taking on the innovative role of “cyclor”.
